Her parents have been Jim O'Grady who is a financial advisor as well as Jan O'Grady. Her family raised her by their grandparents in Wheaton within Illinois and was graduated in 1981, with a degree from Wheaton-North High School. The model was featured in several commercials before making the move to Los Angeles in 1986. Her career started as an actress in commercials and models with Montgomery Ward. She was a part of the 1988 romantic comedy She's Having a Baby and was later cast as a recurring role in the ABC comedy China Beach, opposite Dana Delany. Her other guest appearances included TV shows, independent movies, and many other shows. Donna Abandando played her first principal role on ABC's NYPD Blue the police drama. O'Grady was the big-haired team secretary for the ABC drama NYPD Blue from 1993 until 1996. Each year, she received Emmy Award nods for Outstanding actress in the Drama Series. Together with the her castmates, she was awarded the Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Performance by an Ensemble in an Drama Series in 1995.
