O'Neil was a student in high school when she auditioned in 2005 to be a part of the third Canadian Idol season. She made it to the top tier of contestants following the judges' praise for her singing ability. O'Neil received excellent praise from her judges. She was a victim of significant loss in the top 10 and Top 9 weeks of the finals when she was voted into the bottom three and bottom two, respectively. The judges were astonished by the outcome and urged the audience to support singers with impressive singing skills similar to Melissa. O'Neil's performances were consistently good, that he did not fall into the top 3. Her performance on the 7th September in 2005 was such a dazzling performance that judge Werner predicted the newspaper headlines. O'Neil beat Rex Goudie to become the third Canadian Idol. O'Neil received a phone call from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin congratulating her on being the winner of Canadian Idol immediately.
